Allen is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia
where he performed in any ensemble that used trumpets.
In 1984 he met and became a student of Bobby Shew.
Allen has performed with jazz artists Clark Terry,
Dizzy Gillispie, Louis Bellson, Conte Condoli, Gary Foster,
Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, John Faddis, Marvin Stamm,
Buddy DeFranco, Conrad Herwig, Bill Watrous
and John Fedchock, to name a few.
Some of the entertainers Allen has performed for include
Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Mel Torme, Jack Jones,
John Davidson, Olivia Newton-John, Bob Hope,
Bob Newhart, Glen Campbell, Frank Gorshin, The Four Tops,
The Temptations, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Jan & Dean,
The Beach Boys and The Manhattan Transfer.
Allen is currently on staff with the University of
Missouri-St. Louis and the University of
Missouri-Columbia where he teaches Jazz Trumpet,
Jazz Combos and Jazz Improvisation. In addition
to working with the Norm Ruebling Band,
Allen performs regularly with the St. Louis Jazz Orchestra,
the Columbia Jazz Orchestra, The Jim Widner Big Band,
Lenny Klinger’s Galaxy, The University of Missouri
Jazz Combo-MUFJAC and is in demand as a studio
musician, as well as a performer/clinician in
Jazz Festivals throughout the Midwest.
In 2004 Allen produced a solo CD entitled “First Time Out”
available on the Chase Music Label.
As a Yamaha Performing Artist, Allen uses
Yamaha Trumpets and Flugelhorns exclusively.
